Mustang’s Football Team: CIF Recap

Posted on December 6, 2011July 27, 2012 by Tiffany Ha Yeung Yang

California Interscholastic Federation is a governing body for high school students in California. CIF’s mission, as its website explains, is “to developing student-athletes of character.” Therefore, the federation gives opportunities to high school students who have shown steadfast efforts as athletes and as students. For the last three months, Yorba Linda High School’s fall sports players have worked with perseverance and passion.

Varsity Football team under Coach Bailey is still playing. They won their first round game against Troy by 28-21. With the win, YLHS Football team upgrades its record to 10-1, with the only loss to Cypress High School. Coach Bailey named four players as the most memorable players throughout the games: Alex Bernstein, Paul Najarian, Lorenzo Ruiz, and Brandon Stewart.

“It’s been an outstanding year with first year senior team; it’s been exciting”, Coach Bailey tells, “We’re open to keep going further into playing awesome and go for the championship.”

The Men’s Water polo team under Coach Djahangiry got to the quarterfinals with a loss to Beaumont by 12-8. On the first round against Pacifica of Oxnard, YLHS beat them by 16-6. And for the second round, the team went to Riverside to defeat Ramona who was the league champs in their league by 10-8. On the second game, Coach Djahangiry accolades, “we played without two of our starters, but Landon Metzen and Austin van Ginkel stepped up for their team and played big teams in why we won!”

“Taylor van Ginkel and Sean Cody were the players who stood out”, Coach Djahangiry is excited to tell, and “Taylor scored something like 20 goals in 3 games! And Scody in the first two games had quarters; he completely shut out the other teams, against Beaumont both played out of their minds!”
