As individuals, everyone can make a meaningful impact to instill greater compassion in one’s local community.
One way of achieving this is through helping those in need. When asked about what other ways people can do to help society, Mirha Baek, a mother of two, stated, “I participate in community service at charities and shelter homes by donating. This is one way of how I help others.”
It’s so easy to invite friends, family, teachers, or club members to help in specific organizations. When it comes to participating in charity or shelter homes, our community can help by donating food, clothes, toys, furniture, and so on. On the other hand, coming up with fun and lively activities in senior homes such as Christmas caroling, creating photo albums, or playing little games would also be of help to senior citizens.
Wendy Donnelly, a retired leader of a girl scouts troop has had some experiences with these events. During an interview, she stated, “Helping others is an advantage for both the people who are helping and the people who are being helped. This way, helpers can learn to be more supportive and thankful for the privileges often taken for granted in their lives.” In fact, the ones who are being assisted get the special chance of getting aid from our community. Although some may believe that helping in a big area may change the world, it’s actually easier for us to make a change in the world if we act in our own communities instead of the whole country or state.
