Good reporting pays off!

As you all know, the whole world is watching to see what will happen with North Korea. News outlets from all over want perspective on the story, and yesterday I received an email from a reporter at the BBC who wanted just that. He had found a piece by a former JSR student who had interviewed a North Korean refugee, and he wanted to interview the student for an international news report.

You never know who will see your work and what doors it might open for you. Sometimes it seems like the reach of a student journalist is small, but if you do good work there is always a chance that it will be magnified. You never know whose eye you’ll catch with unique and challenging content.

The District 13 City Council race is heating up with new endorsements… Governor Brown is in China this week to discuss the business relationship between China and California… It looks like the Democratic Party will be able to defeat a Republican filibuster on gun control… The US Navy has unveiled a new weapon that could undermine future threats like those coming from North Korea… Malawi is beginning a high-profile treason trial against former government officials… Former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who is lauded by some and hated by others, has died…

Thatcher’s death has sent a 74-year-old song to the top of the charts… Country star Brad Paisley is facing criticism over an ill-conceived attempt at addressing racism in (rather terrible) song… Anaheim Angels pitcher Jered Weaver is one of the first major injuries of the baseball season… New software will allow teachers to spy on their students’ reading habits… The National Spelling Bee is getting harder…  A UK tabloid has obtained pictures of Kim Jong Un in his high school’s production of the musical Grease…
