Summer is fast approaching, which means that it’s almost time for the Korea Daily’s annual Leadership Camp, which is taking place this year from June 21-26 at the gorgeous campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu.

Since 2011, Korea Daily Leadership Camps have been establishing a strong tradition of teaching critical thinking, self expression, cooperation, and communication skills in a fun environment. This year’s camp is going to be the best yet. For the first time, Leadership Camp is organized around the theme of “Finding Your Voice” through journalism.

Over a week, participants will learn the history of advocacy journalism while learning how to create their own journalistic works about issues that are important to them. They will participate in workshops with professional journalists and engage in writing and speaking activities that improve their academic skills while boosting their confidence. Students will engage with technology throughout the camp, learning how to use computers and the Internet as tools for not only finding knowledge but publishing it and making an impact on the world. To help us, Samsung has generously agreed to provide 100 Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition tablets so that each student can take notes and produce coursework with top-of-the-line equipment.

Leadership Camp students have a fantastic time learning and engaging with each other.

In a posting on Instagram, high school participant Eddie Kim said of last year’s camp, “My experience at this camp was life changing and all of our hard work felt so rewarding. “

Angela Kim, who also attended last year’s camp, said in a survey, “Leadership camp was the best thing that happened to me during the summer because I was introduced to invaluable social and leadership experiences that have shaped the way I perceive myself and others.”

While it’s full of academic lessons, Leadership Camp is not only an academic camp. It is also fantastic way to meet other smart, enthusiastic kids and forge long-term friendships. Our students return year after year because they make wonderful memories at camp and want to make more.

Kayla Hong, who attended the first camp in 2011, stated, “Leadership Camp is fun because we do many activities and get to meet lots of new people!”

Students who are going into grades 5-9 are invited to participate as Campers. Campers may register before April 4 to get the “early bird” rate of $899, which is discounted $100 from the normal rate of $999. Siblings and groups also qualify for discounts.

Students entering grades 10-12 are invited to participate as Student Mentors. The rate for Student Mentors is $699.

In addition to learning about journalism and participating in amazing activities, Student Mentors get direct leadership experience as the heads of small student groups that must use teamwork to accomplish several tasks over the course of the week. In addition to being a fantastic opportunity to learn leadership, being a Leadership Camp Mentor is also a fantastic hands-on training experience for JSR Editors or those who hope to become JSR Editors.
