JSR Application Deadline is Extended to July 8

Posted on June 27, 2014June 27, 2014 by JSR

The next semester of the Joongang Student Reporter (JSR) program begins in July.

The deadline for applications has been extended. Applications are available now (see below) and must be submitted by July 8, 2014.

Student reporters write articles for potential publication in the Korea Daily (Joongang Ilbo) as well as the website at www.jstudentboard.com. Although the Korea Daily is the largest Korean-language newspaper in the United States, JSR articles are written in English.

During the session, students will plan, write, and revise an article every three weeks. Under the supervision of editors, they will work to revise these articles for potential publication. Additionally, there are electronic worksheets and in-person workshops to improve the students’ journalistic skills as well as a field trip to a journalistic organization in the Southern California region.

NEW and CONTINUING APPLICANTS: Download the application form for new students as an Adobe PDF, a Microsoft Word Document, or a Google Doc. This form includes specific instructions for students applying to be either New Students, Continuing Students, or Editors.

The fee for new students is $500/semester.  For continuing students, the fee is $350/semester. Additionally, continuing students will receive a $50 discount for referring new students to the program; if you refer a student, be sure that student writes your name in the “referral” section of the New Student Application for you to get credit. The application form includes a payment sheet – you may pay via credit card or check. The Korea Daily will not charge you or cash your check until you have been accepted into the program.

Please still apply even if you do not think that you can pay the fee — JSR offers scholarships to students who need financial assistance. Scholarship information is included in the application packets.

New applicants will be expected to submit samples of their writing as well as recommendation letters. Recommendations should only be one page long and should be submitted along with your completed application. Recommendations must be in English and cannot come from the applicants’ parents or other family members.

After four years of being a single page, the JSR section has expanded to three pages for 2014. Every week, up to ten students will be published in the Korea Daily.
