On March 15, more than 26,000 runners within different male and female divisions from ages 12 to 87 participated in the 30th annual Los Angeles Marathon. Among the large number of runners, two runners from the West Ranch High School Cross Country team participated together in this run to test their running abilities and gain new experiences.

Allison Miller and Siobhan Rubio, both Cross Country runners and juniors at West Ranch, ran past thousands of spectators on the 26.2 mile trek through major LA landmarks such as Little Tokyo, Chateau Marmont, and Rodeo Drive. After passing the finish line together, clocking 5 hours, 51 minutes, and 51 seconds, both runners gained confidence in being a better runners.

Miller and Rubio shared their experiences with JSR.

“My dad and my sister both ran in the LA Marathon two years ago so I wanted to do it too. The marathon was something I had on my ‘bucket list’ so it was really cool that I could cross it off,” said Miller.

Running requires self motivation and determination. Due to teamwork developed through school events, Miller and Rubio were able create synergistic effect from depending on one another during the marathon run.

“I just thought that if Siobhan kept going, I would keep going,” Miller continued. “I wanted to give up but Siobhan kept pushing me to keep going.”

Both runners agreed that participating in the LA Marathon would be an awarding experience for anyone, regardless of his or her running ability.

“I think the LA Marathon is awesome. It’s a good way to stay fit with all the training and so many people can fundraise for their organizations. I think it’s amazing that people use it to raise money for people who can’t run a marathon because of their disabilities, mental or physical,” shared Miller.

When asked for advice she could give to future participants the marathon, Rubio told JSR. “It’s really fun. Just try not to push yourself too hard and over do it. Your safety comes first.”

The next annual LA Marathon will be held on February 14, 2016, and the registration will open on September 1. To learn more about the event, visit www.lamarathon.com.
