Little Rain in Southern California

Posted on March 8, 2016 by Aleen Kim

In the Eastern United States, it’s raining and storming almost everyday, but recently Southern California hasn’t gotten a lot of rain. Many people were expecting a lot of rain this winter, because it’s expected that an El Niño will occur. However, many people who love rain are complaining about the lack of rain.

Sue Kim, a Crescenta Valley High School parent, said, “It’s supposed to be an El Niño, but it’s not raining. Even on the weather channel it states that it’s going to rain but then a couple minute later it changes and it states that it’s not going to rain.” California is in a drought season. It is important to know the concept of El Niño in understanding why there isn’t any rain.

According to LifeScience.com, “ An El Niño is a climate cycle in the Pacific Ocean with a global impact on weather impact.” The primary reason why there is no rain is because there’s too much pressure above the atmosphere.

According to the Los Angeles Times,  “High pressure literally means there’s more air in the atmosphere above people. And it pushes down on the air. And when it does that, it compresses it, and it literally heats up through compression.” There is still hope that a storm will come in Southern California. According to the Los Angeles Times, “Storms have made a direct hit in the mountain areas where federal and state water projects capture rain and snow and deliver the water across the state.”

Rain is what everyone needs because of the crops, and now there is hope that there is going to be more rain.
