People struggle and fight for many reasons such as work, childcare, study, personal relations and more. In order to reduce stress, people engaged in hobbies. According to the study, Annals of Behavorial Medicine, people who have hobbies were 34% less stressed and 18% less sad during the activities. Also, their heart rates were lower and the calming effect lasted for hours.

Having a hobby is important because it detracts focus from personal issues, and generates good feelings, like self-confidence,happiness, and more. There are all sorts of hobbies that fit for different people, but a new kind of pastime was recently added that was unexpected by many. It is coloring. Coloring is usually related to children, but now it is used as a stress reliever for adults. People can gain substantial positive effects like relieving stress and  removes from stressful thoughts and worries by concentrating and immersing in coloring.

Today, coloring books are part of chromotherapy, also known as color therapy. It is one of many psychology therapies that is used often for people with mental illnesses. By participating in art activities, patients display their thoughts that are usually hard to express in words. Originally, it was invented for children who could not express their feelings, but now, it is also used as a mainstream medium to adults who hesitate to open up vocally.

In interview with JSR, Soo Min Lee, a college student, said “I love coloring books even though I thought it is childish at the first time. I think they are the best way to get rid of something that disturbs you.”

In Goethe’s book, Theory of Colours, he says, “People experience a great delight in colour, generally. The eye requires it as much as it requires light… That healing powers were ascribed to coloured gems, may have arisen from the experience of this indefinable pleasure” Like Goethe said, colors give positive effects to people and it might be an oasis to people who lives in flurried daily work.

It is a good idea to put smartphones, internet, or any other electric devices aside and enjoy feeling analog sentiments with colorpencils, and coloring books.
