What is Zika Virus?

Posted on March 21, 2016March 18, 2016 by Min Jee Kim

A virus is spreading across South America, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific and is spread by a type of mosquitoes called Aedes mosquitoes. This virus was contracted by a man in Taiwan, too, which caused more people in other countries to be cautious of this virus. However, currently there is no vaccine or treatment that can completely cure this. So for now, the only way to prevent yourself from getting this virus is to be very careful to not get mosquito bites.

The signs of this virus are fever, muscle and joint pain, headache, and skin rashes. The symptoms are not very clear, but will last for two to seven days. However, the symptoms are similar to other viruses, so people might get the illness confused with a non-serious virus or cold. That is why it is best to go right away to the hospital and get check for no confusions. Like mentioned before, there is no specific treatment for Zika virus.

Once with the Zika virus, one should have enough rest, drink a lot of fluid, get common medicine for treating for pain and fever. Also if there is a sign of the symptoms getting worse, then it would be best to go to the hospital and get a check-up.

The way to prevent the Zika virus is to reduce the chance of getting a mosquito bite. Using insect repellent, covering up the body as much as possible so that the mosquitoes cannot bite, and other ways to reduce chance of having contacts with mosquitoes will also help prevent from getting Zika virus.

A consequence of Zika virus occurs when the virus spreads to a pregnant woman. Women with the virus could have a baby with microcephaly. Microcephaly is when babies have very small heads (less than 32 cm) and these babies will not be able to be like normal babies. Also, the baby with a mother with the infection could die right after birth or have problems with the brain, sight, or hearing.
As of now, everyone should be very careful of the Zika virus because it started from South America but is spreading across other countries and continents. This virus is spread by mosquitoes and they are very common all over the world and there are no specific treatments. Thus, it is very important for everyone to be alert of this Zika virus so that it won’t spread too much around the world.
