As the elections are closing in between two candidates, American citizens are getting anxious about what their futures will hold. Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner, has been faced with several controversial setbacks, as he is viewed as a “joke” on social media and as someone who is incompetent to run as the President of the United States. On the other hand, some people view him as the perfect candidate who will “make America great again.”

As Trump has numerous towers and millions of dollars to his name, people believe that he will make America rich as well. Trump told the Washington Post that, though the American economy seems to be headed for recession, he would be able to fix it. In a poll completed by Zogby, Trump was rated as a figure who could successfully take on economic issues.

“Trump can change the economy for us,” stated Mark Abella, a 37-year-old businessman living in Los Angeles. “Because he’s a successful businessman, he can change the debt-ridden economy of America.”

Since Hillary Clinton is Trump’s rival, several people explained that they preferred Trump’s policies over those of Clinton.

In an interview with the NY Post, President Obama’s half-brother, Malik Obama, stated “I like Donald Trump because he speaks from the heart. ‘Make America Great Again’ is a great slogan.” He stated that he disliked Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, because she was not prosecuted for the controversial, private email server she used while as Secretary of the State.

An anonymous, 27-year-old accountant explained that he believed people were voting for Trump because “his whole position is that people should earn what they get. For example, in education, he’s pushing for schools to be fund-based depending on its school performance versus giving all schools the same funding. He believes in competition and that the idea of competition will save this country.”

In response to the immigration issue, he also stated Trump supporters believed that “nothing should be ‘free,’ which is becoming appealing to middle class Americans who believe they worked really hard to get where they are, while there are people out there, like immigrants, who are benefiting from our current social structure at the cost of ‘hardworking’ Americans.”

Don Han, a 28-year-old healthcare analyst, specifically supports Trump for his trade, military and immigration policies . Similar to what the accountant stated, Han told JSR, “I support Trump on the basis of “America First,” which includes not starting wars of choice or exporting jobs via free trade agreements at the expense of America. It means prioritizing the needs of people who are American citizens instead of giving benefits and money to those illegally within America’s borders.”

Several people stated that they follow Trump because he is a wealthy, successful businessman. Others stated that his policies trumped Clinton’s policies. As the election continues with debates and conventions, the result for who the next President will be will be announced in November of 2016.
