Enroll in AP High School

Posted on August 31, 2016August 29, 2016 by Linda Lee

High school is a time for students to learn valuable skills that will prepare them for the future, which is why they should consider the Advanced Placement, or AP, program. The challenging curriculum not only exposes students to the rigor of college but also enables them to explore their passions.

At first glance, AP courses may seem intimidating. Since they are classified as college-level courses, these classes are rigorous and fast-paced. Time management, hard work, and self-motivation are therefore essential to success in an AP class.

Of course, many students also maintain extracurricular activities whether they be clubs, sports, or volunteering. Learning to balance extracurriculars with an AP course load makes high school a difficult transition for students at first, but it will eventually shape them into responsible and well-rounded individuals who will be prepared for what college will offer.

Gurbir Singh, a senior at Granada Hills Charter High School, California, shared his experience with AP classes.

“Don’t be scared of AP classes because they are for the ‘advanced’ or ‘smart’ kids. AP classes are all about working hard and doing things that you enjoy. In the past, I’ve struggled a lot with AP courseloads, but you can do well, learn a lot, and have lots of fun by working really hard.”

Recently, the AP curriculum shifted to adopt a more analytic and Common Core-aligned approach to concepts. Because of these changes, AP students can gain relevant skills such as data analysis and deducing connections between overarching principles. The purpose of the AP program is to instill strong study habits and a problem-solving mentality that will be necessary for college and beyond.

AP courses are an intelligent way for students to find their passion. The AP program offers a plethora of courses including computer science, literature, calculus, psychology, and studio art. By enrolling in these courses, students have an opportunity to explore various interests, which may not be offered in a regular high school curriculum

“I’m really glad that I took AP Biology because it made me realize how much I love the field. I want to be a doctor so that I can work with this knowledge as a career,” said Alice Kim, a senior at Valencia High School, California.

Through AP courses, students can transform high school into a rewarding and educational experience. With enough motivation and drive, intimidating challenges can become exciting opportunities for growth.
