“Oddly Satisfying” Slime Takes Over!

There is a new internet trend going around. Once thought of as gross and disturbing, “slime” has now taken over the internet. It claims the title of “Oddly Satisfying” on many social media pages, and YouTubers and Instagrammers alike are trying out this current internet sensation for themselves.The internet is obsessed with this peculiar, new innovation – a strangely addicting piece of…who knows what?

Instagrammers post videos of themselves squishing and playing with the slime, a sight that is indeed ‘oddly satisfying’ for many viewers, and YouTubers show different methods for making DIY slime. And every other social media platform has expressed its enthusiasm towards this newly-surfaced trend.

Not only is the feeling and texture of slime pleasing, but so is the sound. Many are fascinated by the pleasant sounds of the slime. The noise can be associated with the sound of popping bubble-wrap and can be described as a “crunchy” noise.

This internet sensation has become so popular and widely-known that there is a name for people on Instagram who post these kinds of videos: slimers. The hashtag #slime has been used on Instagram more than 1.5 million times.

Slime is not the only thing growing in popularity–there are different variations of slime including floam, bubblegum slime, fish bowl slime, and more. Floam is essentially the slime with added styrofoam balls. Bubblegum slime is also just slime except with a fluffier quality, usually in a light pink shade, resembling that of bubblegum. Fish bowl slime, perhaps one of the most satisfying of its kind, is slime with small fish bowl filler beads added in. This is arguably one of the most pleasing slimes because it has the crunchiest texture and sound due to the beads.

Coming from a tester of these slimes, perfecting these does take multiple experiments. This is definitely a trial-and-error process since there are no perfect, exact recipes or measurements for making slime. Others who have tried out this trend have agreed.

Haeun Hyeon, student at Valencia High, said, “The first time I tried making slime, it didn’t work out. A lot of the times, I was just eyeballing the measurements, and I think that’s the way it is for a lot of people. This is all just an experimental process and sometimes you’ll achieve the perfect texture while other times, it will just be another failure.”

Though there is no guarantee that the slime will turn out perfectly, Hyeon says, “Once you attain the slime that perfectly fits your taste, it will feel very rewarding, not to mention ‘oddly satisfying.’”
