Saying goodbye and welcoming others is a necessary aspect of change.
[Source: petertsaiphotography.com]Since the beginning of the 2016-2017 academic year, L.A.C.E.S (Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies) has said goodbye to many faculty members and welcomed new faculty in the process. Although many teachers left at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year, this academic year proved to be most challenging for students and faculty as new faculty members were learning the ropes and students adjusting to new teaching methods.
The faculty members that did leave, left for various reasons such as a better job opportunity or promotion and even pregnancy. The faculty members that have replaced them seems to be adjusting well, but it hasn’t sat well with many students due to the fact that the faculty members that left taught challenging AP courses at L.A.C.E.S.  Students rely on each other’s knowledge of teaching styles and workload when they determine who to take their AP classes with, but with new teachers, it has been a gamble to them.

The students express their joy for their teachers who have left for their accomplishments, they are still very sad to have to say goodbye to the familiarity of these teachers.  However, it does not stop the students from having hope for the new teachers to be greater than the prior even if the adjustment period takes a long time.

Faculty adjustments were made even more difficult this academic year as the school principal also changed in the middle of the school year. It is unknown how long the full transition will take with practically a brand new staff and how the students will benefit or suffer, but it seems as though students and faculty are all working together to better acclimate to the changing of the tides at L.A.C.E.S.

In the end, the education needs of the students at L.A.C.E.S seems to be the first priority for all new faculty and staff. And, whatever the reason, saying goodbye to some faculty and welcoming others has been challenging but hopefully well-worth it in the end.
