In America, almost everyone knows a person who owns a dog or owns one themselves. According to Gallup.com, forty percent of the American population own a dog. However, most of these people don’t know the benefits of having these dogs. For example, Terry Shin, an upcoming senior Crescenta Valley High School, told JSR, “I didn’t know dogs could benefit people at all. Dogs benefit one’s mental health and one’s health in general.”

It may be obvious, but dogs can improve one’s mental health. Dog owners suffer less from depression than non-dog owners. With a dog’s live affection, a dog owner can become more positive.  Not only that, dogs make one have a more social life. According to mentalfloss.com, “Polls show people trust others who have dogs more than just random people walking on the street and are more likely to go up and interact with them.”  One may not have not thought about this, but bringing a dog to work if possible leads to less stress. Studies have shown that people who bring their dog to work have a lower stress level, because it leads to more break which results to greater satisfaction.

There are many comprehensive benefits of owning a dog.

What’s more surprising is that dogs help with health in general. Intriguingly, dogs can make one have a better heart. Just by petting a dog, one’s heart rate and blood pressure could go down. Dogs, having lots of energy, have to go out a lot and run. This motivates dog owners to exercise. Exercise like running and walking decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, dogs have a good sense of smell. This ability allows them to detect or sense cancer more quickly than normal people.

Even though one may buy a dog because of its look or because it was abandoned, now people know that there are advantages for having a dog.
