With the temperatures blazing people are doing everything they can to stay cool as they wait and hope for the weather to cool off as the season transitions into fall.  However, many times, people tend to forget that furry friends also need to do the same.  It’s very hard for dogs to cool off compared to humans, considering that they don’t produce as much sweat.  While owners love to take their pets to the park, pool, or beach with them in their efforts to cool off, they should follow certain precautions when the temperatures are soaring high.

Just like human beings, dogs get dehydrated.  It’s important that dogs are fed enough water throughout the day.  Being out in the heat for too long may also increase the chance of having a heat stroke in dogs.  Therefore, never leave dogs in a car, even if it’s just for a quick minute.  Furthermore, if you do see a dog locked in a hot car, don’t walk away or ignore the situation.  Gather the necessary information – the type of car, car model, license plate – and try to find the owner.  If the owner cannot be found, call animal patrol or 911.

Lastly, dog’s paws are very sensitive so always makes ure to check where your pet is walking.  Usually, it is a good idea to lay your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds to check.  If the pavement is too hot for your hands, it’s definitely too hot for your dog’s paws.  Paws can be very hurtful when damaged and so many veterinarians recommend buying a comfortable pair of walking shoes for your dogs.  It can help protect their feet from the heat as well as dangerous things like broken glass on the ground.  There is also the option of sunscreen for your dog that can be provided and approved by a veterinarian.

With the heat relentlessly blaring in the recent week, it is important that whatever activities one engages in with their pets, it is important to keep them safe from this intense heat.  Of course, there is nothing wrong with seeking the outdoors to cool off, but always make sure to keep your dog’s safety in mind.
