With over 40 million households caring for a pet in the United States alone, the care and nurture for these family companions holds a pivotal element in families. Many factors such as food brand choice, pet health care, space, and treatment all weave into the effect of their well being.

With the reliance upon pet food companies to provide pets essential nutrients comes the growing responsibility of the owners to carefully select their brand. “Marketing ads have the power to manipulate audiences to buy their products regardless of whether it really has any nutritional value,” says Irvine High sophomore Michael Libovner. “As a cat owner myself it’s very important for me to choose the best brand.”

Most large cat food companies like Friskies and Purina have the most marketing influence, though the main ingredient in their staple food product is corn meal, which does not provide much nutritional value at all. Not only does food significantly impact the longevity and health of pets, but health care does as well.

The issue over pet insurance and its overall effectiveness continues to expand. Although it is not required, many people argue that it is effective in the aspect that it could help financially with unexpected costs, much like health insurance for humans.

Another important aspect of caring for pets is simply having a basis knowledge with respect to the pet’s needs. Mistreatment and abuse of pets is widespread across the globe. Though anti-cruelty laws exist, there have been millions of reported cases of animal abuse. There also exists numerous nonprofit organizations to help aid pets, and opportunities to volunteer at shelters and stores.

“Looking after your pets’ needs are just as important as anyone’s,” says Irvine High junior and AP Biology student Chloe Hoang. “There’s a sense of responsibility with the fact that you are responsible for another life.” As part of a family, pets can positively impact their owner’s lives.

Caring for a pet’s health is both a significant factor in their well being and a way to express love and responsibility. The benefits of pets are limitless; cat’s purrs help support bone density, and living with cats and dogs stirs resistance against foreign particles. With growing numbers of pet owners comes a greater responsibility of care and nurture.
