In 2013, a seven membered K-pop boy group debuted under a very small company, BigHit. Although they were not popular or successful until the past few years, BTS worked hard to relay important messages in their music about the youth and society. Years of hard work and dedication has led them to globalize all around the world and lead them to Western popularity, especially in the U.S.

Now, BTS have won the Top Social Media Award at the Billboard Music Awards(BBMAs) this past May and have received overwhelmingly positive praise by many people and fans all over the world. Not only have they received this award, which was the first time a Kpop group has received an award at the BBMAs, but they have captured the interest of many western artists such as Steve Aoki and Halsey. Their most recent mini album release, titled “Love Yourself”, has also broken the record for the largest amount of sales, exceeding 1,370,000 copies, according to Gaon Charts.

In recent days, news has been revealed that BTS would make their American debut at the upcoming 2017 American Music Awards (AMAs). Performing next to many popular artists such as Selena Gomez, they will be the first Kpop boy group to perform at the AMAs. Not only that, but they have been confirmed to attend the Jimmy Kimmel show and perform at his mini concert series. The free tickets offered by Jimmy Kimmel have all disappeared in a matter of seconds as fans scoured to secure these tickets.

People are wondering how BTS received so much recognition in the past few months, especially in the U.S. Many factors may contribute to their success, this including: their closeness with their fans, also called the ARMYs and their ability to touch the youth with their messages in their songs. Being active on Twitter, BTS boasts 9.8 million followers and stress to provide content for the ARMYs.

With their recent popularity rising more and more, many people are anxious and excited to see their debut in America. Haeun Hyeon, an 11th grader at Valencia High School, voices her opinion on their recent popularity.  “I have been a huge fan of BTS since 2014, so it makes me happy to see them succeed, especially in the U.S. I cannot wait to see them on American television getting recognized with other talented artists.”

Their popularity does not seem like it will go down any time soon as they seem to break records every month. Their authenticity will continue to raise their popularity and BTS will continue to gain fans and supporters every step of the way.
