Taxes. Taxes. Taxes are one of the most debated issues in government. Should taxes be increased, or should they be cut? Democrats tend to favor increasing taxes on the wealthy to help support those in lower income brackets. However, Republicans are known for wishing to cut taxes. With both the House and Senate under Republican control, the Republican party was able to enjoy their first major legislative success: they passed their tax bill.

The tax bill that the Republicans have passed has been under debate because of its controversial nature. With two opposite sides, the tax bill has many Democrats criticizing the Republican party for looking out for corporate interests. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has been harsh in his criticism of the proposed and passed bill. According to an NBC interview, Sanders stated, “This is not a tax bill designed to help the American people. It is a tax bill designed help the wealthiest people of this country and the largest corporations, and I’m going to do everything I can to see that it is defeated.” On the contrary, Republican supporters are claiming that this tax bill will actually help the middle class as their taxes will be lowered.

Despite the Republican support for the bill, not many Americans are keen to support it. According to CNN, roughly 55% of Americans are against the tax bill, while around 33% support the passed bill. In addition, CNN reports that the tax bill will lower the corporate tax will decrease around 14% as it drops from 35% to 21%, allowing corporations to pay less. The opposition stems from criticisms similar to those posed by Bernie Sanders: the tax bill will disproportionately help the upper class corporations. When interviewed by JSR, Immaculate Heart High School Sophomore Jennie Kim, “The new tax bill gives massive tax breaks to the rich, who I think do not need this ridiculous break. The middle class will undoubtedly be hurt as taxes may increase for lower income classes.”

Currently, the effects of the tax bill are not easily predictable. Many claim that the tax bill will hurt the middle class, but many supporters say the bill will end up saving middle class taxpayers from paying more in taxes. However, it is still too early to determine the effects of the tax bill or tax cut, but the American people can look to the past to see the effects from similar outcome. Is the Republican legislative victory a step in the right direction for America? Only time will tell.
