Who is Better? An Introvert or Extrovert?

There are two types of people in this world: extroverts and introverts. Extroverts are people who approach others first, and introverts are people who wait until someone to approaches them first. As a result, extroverts tend to be more social and outgoing, making many friends. However, that does not necessarily mean that introverts do not have friends. Rather, when introverts are making friends, they tend to be careful. There are pros and cons of being an extrovert or an introvert.

According to psychologytoday.com, “introversion is about deriving less reward from being the center of social attention. Getting the spotlight is not that important or fulfilling. Extroverts, in contrast, love social attention. It energizes them, it brings out their best qualities, and it bolsters their stamina, extemporaneous thinking, and productivity.”

A majority of people think that being an extrovert is easier when finding jobs and going to college, but sometimes these things can be difficult for them too. Julie Cho, considered an extrovert by her friends, stated, “Sometimes, connecting with people seems very easy but at times, I cannot really make any connections with introverts because they tend to be very careful and take their time to make friends.”  Since extroverts and introverts communicate differently, she expressed that sometimes talking to introverts can be a little awkward. However, Cho continued, “At the same time when I talk to others, I can carry on the conversation smoothly and communicate freely with others.”

It is not necessarily bad that you are one or the other. But instead, you should overcome the difficulties.

However, it is true that introverted people have a hard time when interacting with others. A student who considers herself an introvert, Jasmin Yoon, shared her experience. “I once went to this reception and the place was full of people who I didn’t even know. While others were socializing with others, I awkwardly stood there, expecting somebody to come up to me and talk to me.”  She expressed how difficult it is for her to go up to random people and just start talking.

Being an introvert or extrovert can be a plus to one’s life. Cho, who is currently in college, emphasized that once one goes to college, it is important to build relationships, so it is necessary to become an extrovert sometimes. On the other hand, Yoon stated that introverts tend to have imaginations and rich inner minds.

All in all, no matter who you really are, you should be confident about yourself.
