Plastic Straws Have Consequences

Posted on July 15, 2019July 15, 2019 by Nicole Kim (South Pasadena HS)

Most of us use plastic straws in our everyday lives. Almost every restaurant and cafe provides plastic straws for their beverages. They may be convenient, but what many people do not know are the consequences that come with the usage of plastic straws.

Plastic is terrible for the environment. First of all, making any plastic product requires tons of energy and resources and results in creating pollution. Additionally, almost all plastics are not biodegradable, harming the environment even more. Plastic in the ocean float around as microplastics and harm the wildlife and poison the animals.

Plastic straws may seem like no big deal, especially because of their small size. However, they are actually one of the biggest issues. Because of their shape and small size, straws are extremely difficult to recycle and end up in landfills. For example, plastic water bottles may be much larger than straws, but they can be recycled and reused.

No matter how terrible the situation is becoming, there is a solution and it has been implemented in many states. As alternatives to plastic straws, paper straws and reusable metal straws have become more popular. Additionally, Starbucks, a big company, has begun using a new lid that doesn’t require a straw. They also encourage reducing plastic use by providing a small discount if you use your own reusable cup.

Some cities and states have even banned plastic straws completely. Although these little things may not seem like much, they add up and everything helps the environment.
