On Sunday July 15, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School’s Speech and Debate Team held a car wash. From 10 o’clock in the morning to 2 o’clock in the afternoon, members of the team worked hard in the parking lot of Bristol Farms, a neighborhood supermarket. After the members washed a car, the car’s driver could choose how much to donate.
Members of the team brought in towels, sponges, paper towels, and bottles of window cleaner. They also provided the man power to wash cars and advertise on the streets. Each member could choose between a first shift and a second shift, allowing the maximum number of team members to help out with the event.
Haley Silvano, a second year member of the speech and debate team at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, says that the donations will go into funding the team for this incoming school year. With the budget cuts, it’s becoming increasingly harder for clubs to receive a lot of funding. Therefore, clubs, like the speech and debate team, have to take matters into their own hands to raise the needed money.
She also adds that team fundraising events have another important benefit. It brings the team together during the summer months when there are no weekly meetings.
In total, from the generous donations, the team ended up raising $353.60 to pay for tournament fees, traveling fees, and other miscellaneous expenses.
Eventually, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School’s speech and debate team will be holding another, hopefully as equally successful, car wash in August.
