Seal Beach shooting impacts the student body

Posted on November 1, 2011November 29, 2018 by JSR
In respect of the eight lost lives, students of Los Alamitos High School and many Seal Beach residents changed their Facebook profile pictures to this blue heart.

On Wednesday, October 12 nine people in Seal Beach were shot by an estranged father. The father was attempting to kill his ex-wife, a worker at Salon Meritage in Seal Beach. Of the nine, eight people passed away impacting families, neighbors, and friends with a devastating blow. Los Alamitos High School was severely impacted by this tragedy, and students expressed their grief at a candlelight ceremony the following night. Students changed their Facebook profile pictures to a blue heart to commemorate the tragedy and the lost lives of the victims.

On Thursday Los Alamitos High School’s ASB created a poster with a blown up drawing of a heart where all students would be able to sign during lunch. Later, the sign was put up during the candlelight ceremony which was held infront of Salon Meritage.

“It was a touching event where everyone just came together to support one another,” said Tori Paulson, senior, who had attended the candlelight ceremony.

“There were flowers, so many flowers, and notes all over the salon and it was so touching.” Many people felt a city-wide bond over the incident. A lot of students posted statuses such as, “I am so proud to say that I live in Seal Beach,” posted Madi Harris, senior.

The whole incident seemed to have dampened the emotions of the school, but people are carrying on. This week was homecoming week where there was a Pep-Assembly, Homecoming Nominee votes, the actual Homecoming game, and the Homecoming dance. Despite the sad incident, students are moving on, determined to let nothing hinder them from enjoying the start of a school year.
