Everyday, people are making eye contact, an essential social skill used as part of communication. People interact through eye contact, which is one of the most important forms of body language. Just by making eye contact, many things can happen.

Eye contact builds connection and trust between people. When talking with an individual, maintaining eye contact shows respect and interest. Often, when we are shy or embarrassed to talk about a certain topic, we tend to avoid eye contact to make it less burdening. This can also happen when one is trying to hide something.

However, making eye contact is not so easy for everybody. Research shows that shy or more reserved individuals feel uncomfortable looking at others directly. Sometimes, this type of action can come off as rude. Eye contact is especially important when talking to an audience or an individual. For example, when I was in the eighth grade, my teacher held a small class to help the shy students feel comfortable speaking to others while making eye contact. If it does not come to you naturally, practice can always help.

When meeting new people, just by looking at their eyes, one can know a little about their emotions or personality. Eye contact can be used to persuade, show emotions, show understanding, or show respect. Research also shows that keeping eye contact can distract someone and make it difficult for them to concentrate. For example, when you notice that the person you are talking to is losing eye contact and not returning their gaze, you know that the person is getting bored or distracted. Therefore, just by focusing on someone’s gaze or making eye contact, one can figure out many things.

To help those who are more shy, there is eye contact practice. Start off small and go bigger when you improve. Talk to an individual and when that gets comfortable, talk to a larger group. Not only this, but eye contact can also be used to attract someone. When you make conversation with someone you feel attracted to, eye contact can show interest, which builds a stronger connection.

Eye contact is a strong non-verbal form of communication used everyday. Eye contact conveys emotions, understanding, listening, and communication. This is crucial to people who have jobs that require communication with others. When conversing with others, make sure to maintain eye contact to show understanding and respect.
