3-D Movies: To Watch or not to Watch

Posted on March 27, 2012July 27, 2012 by Hoyeon Lee

With their recent increase popularity, 3-Dimensional, or 3-D, movies such as  “Ice Age 3,” “Avatar,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean”  have attracted crowds, who were soon disappointed for many reasons. Here are just three reasons you should not watch 3-D movies:

1. Darker images. 3-D movies have often been criticized for their lack of visual sophistication. During the conversion process from 2-D to 3-D, the film slightly darkens and the effects of animation are less appealing, although these vary from movie to movie. These flaws distract the viewer from what could have been a pleasant and engaging movie watching experience.

2. Money.  When you go watch a movie at a local movie theatre, it costs around $10, depending on the venue; a 3-D movie often costs twice as much. Producing a 3-D movie costs the director between $25,000 and $30,000, depending on the movie. Most of these costs are covered by the pocket money of viewers who expect a higher quality of the movie. Why spend double the price for a darker, distracting movie when there is a cheaper and more appealing option literally next door?

3. The headaches. According to experts, at a 3-D movie theatre, people often have to strain their eyes to adjust to new sensory emotions, such as a different feeling of depth. This can easily cause headaches among viewers

4. On the other hand, there are those glasses. The only appealing thing about 3-D movies is the pair of nerd glasses. You can impress your friends by pretending to be a nerd who just wasted his or her time by watching a 3-D movie. If you are already a nerd, ignore this.
