Fast Food: Cause of the Obesity Epidemic

Posted on December 24, 2012January 4, 2013 by Y. Chan

Literally, every 5 seconds, a person dies of starvation. Whereas, in other parts of the world, people are dying because of obesity, or to simply put it, because they are fat, and as this is beginning to occur in both teenagers and adults, “Fatness” is becoming a bigger and bigger problem.

A delicious looking Pizza, but a poison to the body

Many experts point out that fast foods are responsible for the general rise in average weight. Fast foods are high in calorie, contain very much fat,  salt, artificial additive. Also, it lacks vitamins, fiber, and minerals. In sum, it lacks nutritional value.

However, more and more people keep eating fast foods. One reason can be the widespread fast food industry. Anywhere in the world, people can find a fast food restaurant. There, as people all know, are McDonalds restaurant practically everywhere, from cities to rural areas. According to a study, there is a McDonalds restaurant in almost every 20 meters. No wonder that it’s selling 75 hamburgers per second world-wide.

Another reason  is that it is very convenient. Since people are very busy nowadays, they have less time to spend for lunch. So, they turn to fast foods. In the case of children, as much fast food restaurants are located around them, they are tempted to go to fast food restaurants, where they buy tasty, but in the long run, unhealthy foods smothered with fat.

As a result of this kind of consumption, juvenile obesity is now one of the most important problems that needs to be solved. In one American school in Texas, over 42 percent of the students are obese, and even worse, they don’t even care about it.

There are 3 fast food restaurants per one middle/high school in average. Experts say that the government needs to put their hands on this matter, and promote people to not eat much fast foods, to do a regular exercise and to follow “green diets”.
