Kimi Low

Posted on May 22, 2012May 22, 2012 by Gloria YK Kim

Determined, curious, and friendly, Kimi Low is continuously attempting new endeavors. Unlike her fellow classmates, most of whom have been infected by senioritis, she is preparing to embark on another journey: a Christian mission trip to Arizona over the summer.

This spring, senioritis affected numerous seniors at South Pasadena High School, and could have affected Low. By now, her top college has been finalized, her tasks as a yearbook section editor completed, and her two graduation cords awarded for being a “life member” of the California Scholarship Federation. The senior could as well dust off her hands, say “all done,” and allow her mind to shift to vacation mode. But Low remains focused.

The upcoming mission trip – like Low’s previous attempt at trying out and making the school golf team (despite the fact that she sees herself as far from athletic), and participating in the state and county photography contests (when in fact she has never even taken a formal photography class) then winning – is another opportunity for Low “get out of [her] comfort zone.”

Every week, Low dedicates four to five hours preparing for a youth mission trip to a Navajo Indian Reservation. There, the youth mission team plans to hold a Vacation Bible School for children and teens. Although this is her first mission trip, Low feels that it will be a predecessor to future mission trips.

“I want to do missions work in the future – especially after dental school,” Low said.

Low’s dream of traveling to third world countries and providing dental care not only shows her compassion for others, but also her adventurous nature.

“I like to venture the unknown,” Low said.

Low’s inspiration comes from Amelia Earhart, the first woman to conduct a solo trans-Atlantic flight, who pursued flying despite disapproving conventional views towards women during her time.

Although the chances that Low will choose to fly across the oceans are slight, Low resembles Earhart in character – driven and bound for adventure.

Good feature article! You brought out a lot of the qualities that make Kimi Low unique. She does seem to have a great work ethic, but the story might have been better if you started off the story with a description of WHAT makes Kimi so special. Also, more interesting quotes from Kimi and her peers would have also spiced up the story.

Great article Gloria! I really liked the transitioning, but as Hoyeon mentioned I think more interesting quotes from Kimi would have made the article stronger. Also I think a better title will attract more readers. 🙂
