Korea Reaching Out to Cambodia

Posted on November 2, 2012 by Yaerin Song

“The experience was memorable. More than I expected,” said Na Ye-jin (18). A large group of volunteers and doctors from Choongshin Church, including Ye-jin, traveled to Cambodia to provide medical service and treatments for the patients there.

After a tour of their destination, on the next day, Sept. 30, the volunteer group headed to a region called Dom Daek that is approximately 30 minutes away from downtown. The town has a small church and a high school for students to learn from missionaries. As the volunteer group arrived, many children and patients gathered to wait for their turn to be treated by the doctors. There was a variety of doctors: dentists, family practitioners, ophthalmologists and pharmacists. The patients had a chance to receive medicine for their diseases by the help of these professionals. For entertainment to the children, young children who were part of the volunteer group blew balloons and printed pictures for the patients. To help translating, Cambodian high school students came to help translate English to Cambodian so that the patients can understand.

A student at the high school at Dom Daek, Ratana Dolly (18), said, “It’s wonderful to see smiles across these children’s faces. This experience was incredible because I got to interact with foreigners and see so many people cured by professional doctors. Thank you so much for visiting!”

On the second day, Oct. 1, the medical team traveled to another center at the Phuom Krom village. There was already a community center, Dail group, that was helping out the children. Similar to the medical service at Dom Daek, the doctors took care of patients and gave the people medicines for treatment. One of the children, So Lang (15), said, “We thank you so much for your visit and we will always remember the things you have given to us. We will always remember.”

Coming back on a plane on Oct. 1, the volunteer crew arrived at Incheon International Airport. Many felt that they should be grateful for their own circumstances and were happy that many people in Cambodia were cured.
