Need help with homework? We’ve got help.

Posted on March 15, 2012July 27, 2012 by Lily Hyerin Lee

In 2007, the Library Foundation, including the Los Angeles Public Library, launched the “Live Homework Help” educational program, designed for any students in the 4th through 12th grades who need homework assistance. Since then, over 62,000 tutoring sessions have taken place where students are connected to expert tutors, college professors, certified teachers, and teaching professionals one-on-one through online chats. These Live Homework Help tutors help students develop and improve their academic skills and solve problems on their own.

This program provides tutoring for a wide range of subjects such as: English, math (including Trigonometry and Calculus), science, history, and foreign languages such as Spanish. Available seven days a week from 1 p.m. to10 p.m., this service makes sure that the under-resourced students can also have access to the online program. For those students who do not have a computer or electronic device with access to the Internet at home, the 2,200 public libraries, including the Los Angeles Public Library, gives students access to the Internet with public computers and a library card.

Students can search for a local library near their home and use this free academic enrichment program to ask questions regarding any homework, assignments, and even questions related to college or future careers. Currently, there are 72 library branches, including the Downtown Central Library, continuing with their commitment to support each student’s needs.

“We’re pleased to add Live Homework Help to the many free resources offered by the Library to help students succeed in school and in life,” Fontayne Holmes, City Librarian for the City of Los Angeles, said.

Outside of the students’ public schools, the public libraries provide the next helpful educational atmosphere with the most frequent contact with students within the Los Angeles public institutions. The Live Homework Help is a great opportunity that serves as a critical educational service for many financially disadvantaged students who cannot afford private classes or tutors.

“This live homework help program is so useful and helpful. When I have questions for my AP Calculus AB homework or even when I am stuck trying to start my rough draft for my English class essay, the tutors are able to guide me through and help me academically. I am glad this program is available here for me because I cannot afford private tutors or receive extra help for school academics. I think everyone like me should try this program,” Amit Tsanhani, a junior at LACES, stated.
