SM Student Featured as ABC7’s Cool Kid

Posted on February 13, 2012July 27, 2012 by Charles Kyungchan Min

Santa Margarita Catholic High School’s senior Steven Holcomb has recently been selected as ABC7’s Cool Kid for his admirable works with SM’s Ronald McDonald House Family Club. As the club’s president and founder, Steven has put in tremendous effort to bring comfort to many families whose children are going through long stays at the Mission Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC).

After refurnishing all the furniture at the Ronald McDonald House four years ago for his Eagle Scout project, Steven became interested in help comforting these families and became determined to make on impact on his community. Thus, he started the school’s Ronald McDonald House Family Club. The Ronald McDonald House Club meets once a month to prepare a meal for families staying at the Mission Hospital Ronald McDonald CHOC Living Room because of their children. “The only thing that they want to focus on is their child who’s getting treatment,” said Steven. “So we make a home cooked meal so that just for a little bit of time they can take a brief break and relax for a bit.”

After preparing the food at a club member’s house, the club would transport the dishes the Ronald McDonald House. As soon as they arrived, they would set up for a meal so that the families could enjoy. Steven says that the club’s special meal is the homemade chili and that he hopes the meals the club makes can help the family as much as possible. His club is doing all it can to help stir a good cause, but Steven says that helping families in need is only part of his goal. “Actually a few students who have come with me to deliver the meal had said that they wanted to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and that they wanted to learn more about it,” said Steven. “So that’s my ultimate goal: to spread the word.” There are about 50 members in the Ronald McDonald House Club, all inspired by Steven’s work to help the cause.

Steven says, however, that his plans with the Ronald McDonald will stay with him even after high school. “I’m going to college in a few months, and I want to go somewhere where I can continue to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House.” Not only was Steven recognized by ABC7, but he has also been named “Whiz Kid” by Rancho Santa Margarita Patch, a recognition given to those who demonstrate extreme commitment and qualities. Congratulations Steven!
