Manchester City Soccer in a Big Slump

Recently, in soccer’s English Premier League (EPL), the Manchester City team lost a game to the Liverpool team, 3-0. Manchester City couldn’t find a solution to Liverpool’s strong and systemic pressure throughout the whole game, which finally led to a huge disappointment from Manchester City’s fans. Because of the loss, Manchester City is now ranked in 4th place in the league and a whopping 10 points behind Leicester City which is currently at the top of the league.

More surprisingly, Manchester City’s defeat against Liverpool was their third successive defeat in the league. This is a very unusual performance from Manchester City, because they were such a strong team that  have never been ranked below a 3rd place in the league and won two titles in the last four years. It was their first time losing three consecutive Premier league games since November 2008, and this tells how serious their current condition is.

Joan Kim, who has been cheering for Manchester City for four years, expressed his opinion about the team. “Many City fans including me are now very disappointed about the team. However, I also think that it is pretty reasonable for the team to be in a slump when it has a huge number of injured players.”

It is true that Manchester City has an exceptional number of injured players this season compared to its previous seasons. In its whole first team, except for three players, every player has been injured this season. The healthy three players are Nicolas Otamendi, Martin Demichelis, and Richard Wright, but Richard Wright is a player who hasn’t had a single appearance this season.

However, there is also an opinion saying that injuries are just an excuse. Young Joon Park, who is a huge fan of the European soccer leagues, disagreed with Mr. Kim’s opinion. “Even though Manchester City’s injury problem is considered, it is true that Manuel Pellegrini’s (a head coach of Manchester City) tactics are very naive and ineffective. Every player wasn’t injured all at the same time, so Pellegrini should have come up with a way to improve his team with players that he could use at the moment.”

It is noticeable that Manchester City’s poor recent performance has divided opinions from its fans. There is no right answer between the two different opinions; however, Manchester City certainly has to come back with a better condition and not let its fans down anymore.
