Dogs were not discovered to be a source of therapy until the twentieth century. The first organization for therapy dogs, Therapy Dogs International, was opened in 1976 by Elaine Smith. The organization was made for the dogs to help people. When she worked as a nurse, Smith noticed the positive effects a dog had on the patients and wanted to go further with the research.
Therapy dogs must be trained and certified before they start any work. In this field, there are many roles that are available. Therapy dogs can work in certain environments such as group homes, rehabilitation centers, and psychotherapy offices. They can travel in teams or just with their owner. Often, schools or nursing homes request therapy dogs. Some colleges and universities have a program with therapy dogs to help students de-stress.
However, therapy dogs are different than service dogs and emotional support dogs. Due to the different training and roles, therapy dogs are not allowed the privileges of service dogs. Therapy dogs are trained to sit patiently while being petted or while being read to. Although any dog is allowed to become a therapy dog, they must have a good personality before joining the program. For example, they have to be friendly, patient, gentle, able to socialize, and get along with everyone.
