Since education became so important in our modern world, school became a place where everyone in the world went through in lifetime. However, in modern time, some schools possess negative side of humanity.
The book written by Jay Asher, Thirteen Reasons Why, demonstrates life of a teenager girl who was being bullied at school. The title, Thirteen Reasons Why, represents the thirteen people that caused her to kill herself. As the reader read this book, reader will find what and how each person causes her death in details.
In the beginning of the story, a teenager boy named, Clay, finds thirteen tapes in his locker in his school. He decides to listen to these tapes at his house. Each tape was recorded by a teenager girl named, Hanna, who had killed herself about a week ago. Each tape contained about how each person who bullied Hanna during her school years.
As Clay listens to each tape, Clay discovers how people in his school have treated Hanna cruelly and harshly. First tape was about a boy named, Justin. Justin was the first one on the tape as he was Hanna’s first kiss. However, Justin tells the whole school about his first kiss with Hanna with false facts. Therefore, people start to judge Hanna based on what they have heard.
First tape on Justin was just a start. As tape number gets bigger, there are many events that no one can think that it will happen to high school girl. There was a tape about a boy named, Jason who kept taking picture of Hanna while she was alone in her house when her parents left the town.
Boys were not the only one suffering her. Girl named, Jenny pretended to be Hanna’s friend just to keep her image as nice. There was also girl named, Maria who was drunk while driving a car with Hanna and cause a senior boy to be killed by crashing on the stop sign.
Hanna even put her counseling teacher on her one of tapes. She gives a reason for putting her teacher in her list that he did not try to stop her and gave her more options when she told her teacher that she does not want to live more.
The author of this book, Jay Asher tries to demonstrate the usual problems occurring in every school. According to Statistics observation, about 30 percent of teens are being bullied or teased in the schools. Even though this is less than 50 percent, however, this means every three out ten teens are being bullied. In modern news, there is some news about teenager suicide. This shows that teenage suicide is keep increasing.
Through this book, reader will be able to know the effects of bullies and school environment as everyone in this world has gone through schools.
