A few years ago, the thought of being able to carry around a palm-sized computer seemed impossible. But now, we can easily observe many different people of different age groups carrying around a gadget called the smartphone.
Smartphone syndrome began a few years ago as competing companies started to present their own smartphones with new functions and designs. New model of phones appeared weekly and this led many people to purchase their own highly technological phone to be a part of the smartphone trend.
“It seems like people are trying to get smartphones just to fit in part of the new trend,” stated David Kim, a sophomore at Pacifica High School. As Kim stated many teenagers in high school are highly influenced by the flow of technological trend, continuously purchasing and upgrading their smartphones. Although this may be beneficial to the phone industry, it is not helpful for the pockets of the citizens.
But many teenagers also state that different applications on the Smartphone help with their academic learning.
“Different applications that provide functions like, translator, dictionary, and planner helps me learn more efficiently,” said Andrew Lee, freshman Troy High School. Applications such as Dictionary.com Dictionary, SAT Vocabulary, and Google Translate, are widely used among high school students and are helpful in facilitating the academic studying.
Many students like Lee use smartphone applications effectively for academic reasons but these smartphone also give the students an opportunity to procrastinate and become distracted.
“I think smartphones are useful in many ways but I also think it is extremely distracting,” stated Sam Choi, a sophomore at Cypress High School. Many different free game applications like Angry Bird and Fruit Ninja distracts the students from focusing on the academic tasks.
I like how you qualified the impact of smartphones in today’s society. Interesting article!
Hey Christina!
Nice article. The topic on smartphones is something we all see daily both at school and outside of school. Many of my friends have smartphones and iphones and depending on the user, these devices are used differently. However, I think it is not a good idea to have phones like these because it can easily distract your from your studies, makes your vision worse, and serve as a cheat device. I’ve seen some students at my school who use their iphones during tests to search for answers without the teachers seeing them since this device is pretty small enough to cover.
But like your friend said, this technology trend is inevitable for some of us. People without an iphone may feel excluded from their friends which forces them to buy one as well. However, in the end, I think these devices only serve a negative purpose in making our job harder than it actually is.
