First, store emergency food and water supplies in a dry, accessible area. Once a large earthquake hits, many homes and stores will lose power to operate running water and electricity. Make sure to have non-perishable food and drinkable water to last about 5-7 days. Also, devise a way to communicate with friends and families after an earthquake. Many cellular towers and power may be down and the only way to call someone would be by battery-powered radio or a landline. National Geographic explains that people should, “Keep a supply of canned food, an up-to-date first aid kit, 3 gallons (11.4 liters) of water per person, dust masks and goggles, and a working battery-operated radio and flashlights in an accessible place.”
Additionally, locate a place in each room of the house that you can go to in case of an earthquake. It should be a spot where nothing is likely to fall on you. All large furniture should be bolted down and cupboards should be strongly latched to the wall. When inside the room make sure to drop down and take cover under something sturdy (bed, table, etc). It is important to stay indoors until the shaking stops and you’re sure it’s safe to exit. After the earthquake, make sure to remain in a safe place indoors for any potential aftershocks.
